Richard Rankin Instagram – @rikrankin on ‘Halcyon Night’: That kind of speaks for itself. An astro shot of Yosemite Valley just past dusk at twilight, not quite fully night, which is why you’ve got a little bit of light down on the horizon.
That shot was a looong time in the making; I’ve got hundreds of that very same composition at different times of the day from many, many trips around the park.
A composition made famous by Ansel Adams, who introduced Yosemite Valley to the world in terms of a modern sense of photography, photographing the park throughout his lifetime.
On the left hand side, you’ve got El Capitan, in the center is the Half Dome, on the right hand side you’ve got Cathedral Rock and Spires and Bridalveil Fall.
It’s a long exposure, so you’ve got some lights of cars leaving the park down on the valley floor. That’s what is lighting up the central area of the photo. It’s just a very classic night time landscape shot.
