“In its heyday, the Historic Hampton House was considered the “Social Center of the South,” where black performers returned to celebrate after their curtains dropped. These musicians included Ella Fitzgerald, Sam Cooke, Nat King Cole, and Josephine Baker. Biggers’s Blossom Study (2014) prioritizes music as a form of protest in the segregated South through its depiction of tropical foliage blooming out of a piano.
With this work, the artist revisits an earlier work using different materials-in Biggers’s Blossom (2007), a piano fused with a tree plays “Strange Fruit” (an arrangement by the artist). The song, popularized in the 1930s by Billie Holiday, protests the atrocity of lynching. The haunting lyrics suggest that the piano attached to such a tree might be interpreted as a surrogate for a violated human body. Within the context of the Historic Hampton House, an additional layer of historical resonance merges with this body of work.” – @marianneboeskygallery
