When you’re a drumming legend like @stewart_copeland of The Police is there anything that’s still challenging for you to play? Why yes, in fact. Copeland points to a couple of songs that still contain some “challenging stuff” even for him. The first is “Sister Sadie” by the universally recognized God of the drums, Buddy Rich. No surprise there. But the second song, one Copeland calls his “bete noir,” is actually a song by his own band The Police. “Spirits in The Material World” is all up beats which makes it a difficult tune to nail. Let that be a lesson to all you young drummers out there. Your work is never complete. The legendary drummer from The Police, @stewart_copeland takes a moment to appreciate the talent of a fellow titan of the kit @ringostarrmusic. Copeland talks about Ringo’s “groove,” which is an undefinable x-factor in music that just makes you want to dance. Or, as Copeland puts it “people in public thrusting their pudenda at each other in an overt sexual display.” That’s a phrase we’re probably going to think about for a long time. Are you a beginning drummer looking for some tips on where to start? Boy, do we have some good news for you! Not only did we get the legendary drummer from The Police @stewart_copeland to come by and share his philosophy on learning to drum with us, but he says you don’t even need a kit to get started! “Just listen to records and tap on your knees,” says Stewart. That may sound a bit simplistic to you, but this is Stewart f*cking Copeland giving you the advice so it’s probably best if you just take him at his word. Good morning Dubai!
As we come to the end of the year, we thought we’d take a look back at all the incredible things our Polyarts artists achieved this year, starting with the legend himself, Stewart Copeland. This year saw the release of two new albums: Police Deranged for Orchestra and Police Beyond Borders with Ricky Kej, the former of which topped Billboard’s Classical and Crossover charts, debuting at no. 2 and 3 respectively. Also this year, Stewart took the Police Deranged Live show all over the world, from Italy to Detroit, London to Delhi, Luxembourg to Quebec. This year also saw the release of Police Diaries, the written records of his time with The Police, and the bonus-packed reissue of his 1995 album Klark Kent. This week, you can catch Stewart in his final live show of 2023, performing selections from PDO as part of the Resonance Climate Concert in Dubai, in collaboration with the @unitednations, @rickykej and @dubaiopera. Congratulations on a spectacular 2023, Stewart, and more great things to come in 2024!
