“*phone rings*

My groggy 12 year old voice answers the phone
“Hello”
The voice on the other line is my Uncle Willow sounding frantic
Okay “Baby where ya mama at where ya mama at”
“I don’t know I’m at grandmas…”
Uncle Willow hangs up abruptly.
Willow wasn’t my biological uncle but like most black folks a village raises a family so we adopted all the cousins, aunties, uncles and grandmas of the ghetto.
Minutes later my mother enters the door, she and my aunt Pam looked as though they had been up all night. In my gut this didn’t feel good. My mother has on black stretch pants, a suede red over sized button up blouse and nude leather wedge slides. Her blonde TBoz cut was none the less bed side hair but her soft tresses fell so beautifully. As for Pam, denim Jeans brown turtle neck with matching beebop cap brown shoe boots to match.
They wake the house up and everyone comes to the den where I had been sleeping. Growing up I loved sleeping on the couch. I sit up my papa sits on my right side hand on my back and my mother on the left. I could see the puffiness of her eyes through her Fred Frames. My grandma and aunt stood before me arms folded face in despair and disbelief. I looked over to my mother and said “what happen to my daddy” I knew it only had to be him. My mother responded with a quiver to her lips “he gone”. She drops her head and I look at her in confidence “don’t tell me that”. From that point forward my life changed forever.”
Today marks 20 years. 20 years ago my dreams were deferred. 20 years later I wrote, direct, produced, and started in a film in your honor. 20 years later I EP an album in your honor, 20 years laters I’m completely a book of writings in your honor. Daddy, your murder wasn’t in vain. And to the killers you killed a monster and woke up a beast!
