Gillian Anderson Instagram – Thought I’d share some of the books I’ve loved this year which have made me look at the world in new ways. • Open Water is a lyrical modern love story by @caleb_anelson which delicately evokes the Black experience in Britain. Nelson is definitely one of our finest new voices. • You Better Be Lightning is Queer poet and performance artist @andreagibson’s collection of exquisitely beautiful; deeply personal and painfully honest poems about their lived experience. • Quit Like a Woman, is @holly’s appraisal of how alcohol is aggressively marketed at women, and how poisoning ourselves has become a cultural norm. • Decolonising My Body is @afuahirsch’s utterly empowering exploration of our entrenched rituals and beliefs around beauty, and how to liberate ourselves from the oppression of mainstream norms. Over the holidays, I’m going to read @barbara.kingsolver’s @womensprize winner Demon Copperhead. A reworking of David Copperfield set in the Appalachians, which looks unflinchingly at the opioid crisis in America. What books have you been loving? Would love to hear to add to my New Year stack!
