Jesse James Keitel Instagram – I had the incredible honor of receiving this year’s Visibility Award from Black Tie Dinner in Dallas, Texas. A few thoughts as we we roll into transgender awareness week ~ It’s always very humbling to be honored by people & organizations you admire. As actress who is very openly trans, I find the more and more “visible” I become the more i find myself wanting to shrink away. I sadly don’t have audible footage of my speech but here is an abridged snippet: “There’s a somewhat dystopian dichotomy of being one of the chosen few trans women who get to walk red carpets and stand on stages like this in a country trying to legislate us out of society. There have been over 500 anti-trans bills in 49 states this year alone and Texas is responsible for over 20% of them. Cisgender men have won Oscars, golden globes, and Emmy’s for portraying our exploitation and pain and yet we are the ones left fighting for basic healthcare, education, legal recognition, and the right to publicly exist. But how valuable is visibility when at this very moment, families are fleeing beautiful states like Texas seeking refuge, to find a home their trans kids would be safe in? It all feels so frivolous knowing the United States ranks third in fatal anti-trans violence in the world. And even though Texas ranks towards the lowest in access to healthcare, is one of the worst states for childcare and clinical care, politicians seem to make so much of their agenda about people like us.” Extra special thank you to @calliefortexas Poem by @raquel_willis 💕✨ @blacktiedinner #blacktiedinner
