Katie Couric Instagram – Ellie, Carrie and I spent five days in the @turksandcaicos which has become a holiday tradition for us. This year was made even more special because of @potcakeplacek9rescue which takes in stray puppies and dogs and allows visitors to the island to walk them for a couple of hours in the morning. We fell in love with this puppy named ZZ. He came into the shelter in very bad condition—three of his siblings were lost, so the volunteers named the three survivors after BEYONCE—BB, JJ and ZZ. We thought about bringing ZZ home but we have so much travel planned we ultimately decided against it. Jane Parker-Rauw wrote us the sweetest email. “We get a lot of lovely families through our doors just like yours who want to help and quite often that help doesn’t come in adopting a dog. People can help in so many other ways.” Jane said her goal is to control the population through spay/neuter programs, adoption and education. She goes to schools in her “spare time” and talks about animal welfare. “There is no shelter here in The Turks and Caicos Islands and so all of these pups and dogs are looked after in volunteer homes. We keep them until they get adopted. No exceptions.” She went on to say, “We are 100% financed by donations, be it through financial donations to pay the huge dog food bills, vet bills and to keep the lights on, or by bringing down donations in the way of donated vet supplies, toys, puppy formula, pee pee pads, towels and even newspapers to line the crates.
I used to get excited about a man bringing me flowers.. Now it’s pee pee pads and newspapers. How times change!”
I wanted to take a moment to thank Jane and all the volunteers at Potcake Place (like Abby who was so nice!) for everything they do to help the animals on @turksandcaicos_official. “Nobody can do everything,” Jane wrote, “but everyone can do something.” I will be sending a donation. If you’re in the Turks, stop by and give these puppies a hug and a walk! 🐶 🐕 ❤️ Turks And Caicos | Posted on 31/Dec/2023 02:09:23
