Dogs with ball obsessions can really suffer mentally and physically. It is really important to regulate interactions with balls as much as needed, and find other games where your dog can expend their energy less obsessively.
When a dog is after a ball, the dopamine is fired up so much so that a dog may feel anxious, overcome with energy, and unable to decompress and relax. Especially so if they can’t access the ball, or if it’s taken away.
Good substitutes are, teaching your dog a new skill, target training, finding food, scent detection to name a few. Whilst it might be easy for us to throw a ball over and over, it is often not easy for our dogs to cope. Think outside the box when it comes to your dog.
