In some ways this is could be what Lucinda’s song (and Miller Williams’ poem) Compassion is about, when it says “Who knows what goes on down there where the spirit meets the bone?” The sad protagonist in the song is struggling with the damage that he suffered as child -a secret hidden damage that no one knows about. He is another character who needs music as a respite for a painful existence. Unfortunately, it is not enough.
