The “In a Box” projects are recorded live. Live means no editing, no auto-tuning, no re-recording, no playbacks or later additions, no wasted effort into trying to reach an imagined mirage of perfection. For 48 hours I confine myself to one remote place and record intimate, up close interpretations of the songs with no artificial supplements. The camera is meant to imitate an intimate observer’s eye, voyeuristically close and free, in order to get some kind of feeling that we’re all locked in that time and space together. The short time and confined space strips away a lot of the noise and demand a focus on the bare necessities of the songs. The aim, as always, is to find something honest and pure and of that moment. Throughout the years these recordings have sometimes become more noticed than the original album versions. I think the meticulous dissection of album work is still a worthy endeavour as an artist, and I very much aim to continue working on new albums that way… I just think the beauty of the language of music and poetry is their ability to mutate and be translated to what your soul currently needs to sing, so to get a chance to rework the old songs constantly and let them live organically with me and through me is a very powerful experience.
