LEON ICHASO: POET OF LATIN NEW YORK, a series of 5 films by the late Cuban expat director— EL SUPER, CROSSOVER DREAMS, SUGAR HILL, PIÑERO, and EL CANTANTE — opening Friday, Jan 5 @filmforumnyc! On Sunday, Jan 7, I will appear in-person to introduce the 6:20 screening of PIÑERO, my 2001 collaboration with Ichaso, a portrait of the celebrated Nuyorican poet, Miguel Piñero.
The series kicks off with Ichaso’s debut feature EL SUPER (1979), “the ultimate Cuban exile film,” shot entirely in NYC on the streets and in real apartments. Producer/co-screenwriter Manuel Arce and Mari Rodriguez Ichaso (a commentator for CNN en Español and devoted sister of Leon Ichaso) join in-person on opening night! Featuring performances by Rubén Blades, Elizabeth Peña, Wesley Snipes, Marc Anthony, Jennifer Lopez, and more!
