On what would have been Janis’ 81st birthday…🐦⬛
“Laugh in the sunshine,
Sing, cry in the dark
Fly through the night…”
“Written in memory of Janis Joplin, ‘Bird Song’ shows how, even when dealing with the most potent material (here, the death of a good friend at age 27), Garcia and Hunter could be deeply consoling without ever lapsing into the maudlin or sentimental.” -@rollingstone

Today marks the 52nd anniversary of Jerry’s debut solo album, “Garcia.” The majority of the songs were first recorded by Jerry and @billkreutzmann as simple acoustic guitar and drum tracks. Jerry then overdubbed all the other parts to add additional instrumentation. Six of the songs would become staples in the Grateful Dead’s repertoire.
Hooteroll?, the 1971 instrumental album by Jerry and Howard Wales, was released 52 years ago today. Put it on and have a funky Friday! Link in profile.

Owsley “Bear” Stanley would have been 89 today. 🌹
Owsley played a pivotal role in shaping the early trajectory of the Dead and served several key roles as sound engineer (who built the Wall of Sound), band advisor, and art designer (designed the Steal Your Face and Dancing Bears logos).

58 years ago today, The Warlocks played their first show as the @gratefuldead at the San Jose Acid Test.
“We called ourselves the Warlocks and we found out that some other band already had that name so we were trying to come up with a new one. I picked up a dictionary and literally the first thing I saw when I looked down at the page was The Grateful Dead. It was a little creepy, but I thought it was a striking combination of words. Nobody in the band liked it, I didn’t like it either, but it got around that that was one of the candidates for our new name and everybody else said, yeah that’s great. It turned out to be tremendously lucky. It’s just repellent enough to filter curious onlookers and just quirky enough that parents don’t like it.” – Jerry Garcia
