Mark St. Cyr Instagram – Actors have been conditioned to be grateful for crumbs. We’re expected to accept disrespect and abuse as par for the course. In America, film professionals have been acclimatized to working 14 hour work days for months at a time away from family and loved ones. It’s not necessary. But it’s what we’ve been conditioned to accept. It’s expected that we see it as a privilege and not as a job worthy of financial compensation.

Seemingly innocuous sayings like “The Show Must Go On” or “That’s Showbiz, baby” are heard early and often in an actor’s journey. Typically used only after encountering misfortune, grief, and disappointment.

Sometimes The Show Must NOT Go On.
Sometimes you have to take the train off the tracks and repair it before it breaks down completely.

As the AMPTP chose to walk away from the negotiation table yet again, and the SAG strike reaches its 93rd day – I’m very grateful that SAG-AFTRA has held firm. We’ve made it clear that we are not interested in allowing “the show to go on” if it means exploitation and for acting as a profession to be under existential threat.

I look forward to acting again. Promoting projects, celebrating wonderful stories in cinema and television.
But I am heartened to know that *when* we return to work it’ll be in a more sustainable, humane, and financially ethical manner.

Thank you @strikethroughproject for giving me space to share.
