The surge will peak in the next week, with ~2 million infections per day. During this surge, ~100 million people total (~1 in 3 people in the US) will likely get COVID. If you are sick, please stay home if you can. If you have to go into work, please wear an N95 mask to protect others. If you are an employer or political leader, please increase paid sick days. And the reality is that because many people attended large unmasked events over the holidays, and we are in a big surge of COVID cases, now is one of the most important times of the year to wear a mask. Wastewater data suggests there was a 50%+ chance you encountered someone with COVID if you attended an event with 20+ people over the holidays. You can transmit COVID before you develop symptoms, so now is a good time to wear a mask to protect others, and also yourself (if you were lucky enough to avoid infection over the holidays). Start the new year by staying safe and healthy by following the science and taking a few simple precautions like getting vaccinated, wearing a mask, testing, and staying home when you are sick! #health #holidays #newyear #science #medicine #celebration “

Matt McGorry Instagram – We are in the 2nd highest wave of the pandemic. It is not over, but this is/was not inevitable.

PLEASE wear a mask. If at any point it is important, it is when COVID is surging like this (but also important at all other times).

In the U.S, COVID numbers are highest in the North East, with 1 in 14 people being infectious on 12/30 (it’s still going up). Look up @michael_hoerger on X (formally Twitter) & @luckytran on IG for translations of the CDC’s data into something that actually makes tangible sense.

If you can afford an N95, this is the most protective for you and others, followed by KN95s. Surgical and cloth masks are not adequate but are better than no masks. Look up Mask Bloc’s in your area, like @maskblocnyc .

Getting the most recent vaccines is important for maximum protection given how the virus has mutated (since we never fully addressed it and time stretches on). If you are sick, stay home if possible, but if not PLEASE PLEASE wear a well-fitting mask.

Disabled, chronically ill, and other high risk people are afraid to leave their homes because so many people are walking around either consciously sick and unmasked or potentially asymptomatic and unmasked. And as time goes on our rapid tests become less accurate because of the continued virus mutation. Take multiple tests days in a row or look into PCR level tests (unfortunately more expensive like Metrix Aptitude, Lucira, 3eo, Cue) but do not rely on these solely.

High risk people are afraid of dying or being disabled (or further disabled) by doing things they have to do like take transportation, get groceries, go to doctor’s offices, etc.

And even if you’re not concerned about dying yourself, please know that your risk of getting Long COVID goes up with each infection and can disable you (as it has millions of US-ians) for months, years, or a lifetime. Google that shit.

We’ll have to address the systemic fuckery but in the meantime, the shit that was said at the beginning of the pandemic is still true. Solidarity means looking out for each other. Clapping for essential workers…all that shit.

With love and rage 🔥💜🔥
