UNLESS what they’re telling you will make their life more difficult (such as telling you they’re not interested in a relationship or don’t want to have kids). By revealing these intentions, they risk losing their connection with you, which means you should absolutely take those words seriously. And if you stay with them in spite of that knowledge, then they no longer have to worry about leading you on . . . because they’ve told you how they feel. So if they’re telling you they don’t want a relationship but the two of you continue to act like a couple, they get the benefits of a relationship without actual commitment. And if you ever bring up the topic again, they’ll simply remind you: “Hey, I told you I wasn’t interested in a relationship, so I don’t understand why you’re confused.” When someone clearly tells us their intentions, it can be hard to relinquish the hope that they’ll eventually change their mind. But rather than romanticizing a difficult situation, our time would be better spent investing in someone who’s headed in the same direction we are.
