Raja Gemini’s work for NGV Triennial includes a stunning homage to her Balinese heritage, as well as highlights from her career as a global drag artist. Drawing on elements of the explosive dance style known as Kebyar Duduk in Indonesia, meaning ‘to burst open’ or ‘flare up’, Raja’s costume features dramatic accents offset by traditional fabrics.
In different ways, each of the three works serves to highlight the intersection of fashion and performance art that has come to define Gemini’s signature approach to drag.
