This is Nasim. We met back in November when he slid in my dms 🙂 Nasim is a Palestinian Muslim American. He is first generation American born citizen. He served proudly in the United States Air Force. He is a father and a husband. He is a proud Palestinian. He is a proud American. He is also now MY FRIEND. We met because of the DM in slide 2. I was getting sent so much hate and love from so many divided and then I saw this message. We had a zoom. Then a coffee. Then we talked almost every day since. We have had several coffees now. I deeply respect this man. We have differing points of view but we both want in the end the same thing. We are trying even through our tough conversations to have hope and we give each other hope. We can’t speak in our own echo chamber. We need to find each other. We need to find common ground. We need to be the world we envision. What I have found is Nasim and I are both first generation born Americans with fathers who are refugees. We are both raised in Connecticut. We both love our children. We both love our families and our heritage. We both love our country and our freedoms. We both love growing up in the 80’s and miss Thundercats and Fridays at Blockbuster. We are both hurting. More of this. More of Nasim. Tomorrow will be another hard day. We will disagree and we will hurt. We will both wish for a return of the hostages and even more than a cease fire an end to the war. We will both pray for the children of the region on BOTH sides. We will pray for peace, freedom, and co existence. And in the end we will still be friends. We will still have each other. Thank you Nasim.

I learned at an early age to speak up for what my heart told me to follow. As a first generation Palestinian American, I’ve always wanted what everyone on this Earth deserves—the right to coexist peacefully with their neighbors. I am incredibly proud of my Palestinian heritage. I don’t have all the answers to how we get to that place of love and understanding. But these last few months have shown me that maybe it starts small. In our homes, in our communities, with strangers. Listening to each other. Holding space for each other. Reaching out to Scooter at a really dark time for both of our people has evolved into a growing friendship, one where hard conversations take place, but also one where we ultimately see eye-to-eye on the most important aspect—peaceful coexistence. Bring the hostages home safely to their families. The Israeli people deserve to live in peace with security. It’s time to END THIS WAR. The Palestinian people also deserve to live with dignity, peace & freedom. You’re a good man, Scooter. Grateful for our ongoing dialogue. I hope we can show them how it can be done.

We can yell and scream and disagree on so many things but if we can’t agree that we don’t want innocent men women and children being held hostage what are we doing? Two things can be true. So I will make it easy and say it here. I pray for the hostages to be returned and not one innocent life be harmed or lost in Gaza or in Israel. Yes that is a loaded statement with more need for nuance for some. But for today… for @bring.hersh.home and all the suffering mothers today…can We please stand in solidarity. It has been 100 days since this war began and this nightmare started for so many families. Place a 100 on your chest today. #100 #100days #bringthemhomenow
