So Genuine. So Gifted. So Compassionate. Richard was that and SO much more. My testimony….. After exiting a casting director’s office (lots of fellow actors know her, so she’ll remain nameless) I walked into the lobby and as fate would have it Mr. Roundtree and I made eye contact. Obvious to him, I was on the verge of tears when he invited me to have a seat. Attentively, he listened as I explained how the CD had berated me in front of a packed room for not the first, second but 3rd time. This audition, sending me into the lobby to prep for a new character, then come back in. Broken, I told him it was time to cut my losses and walk away cause she was purposely trying to embarrass me. His reply… “You don’t go back you not only give her your power, you allow her to block your Blessing. Your growth. Now dry those eyes, march back in there and show her how strong & talented you are.” While I didn’t get the role, I did get a big ol hug from this Sweetheart I’d just met. Who would’ve imagined that years later, I’d have the honor of playing Shaft’s daughter on Meet the Browns. To the legendary Richard Roundtree…. Anyone remember the infamous “dancing baby”? This meme made its debut in 1988 and commonly known as the birth of AI. About a decade later, Baby Cha-Cha made its TV debut on “Ally McBeal” and became a modern day phenomenon. Backstory… So B4 Divine Intervention led me to Cali, I was an Advertising Exec. in an industry that immediately recognized the implications of this, not so baby of a tech breakthrough. That’s why it’s beyond hard to understand why some folks are making AI out to be some sort of Boogie man that came outta nowhere. The moment that baby danced onto that screen, folks should have been figuring out how to put proper guardrails in place. Here’s the deal…. Technology evolves, gets better with time & Unions are paid by their members to be Proactive not reactive. To have their pulse on industry, instead of attempting to play catch up over 30 years later. For nearly 4 months, so many amazing, hardworking entertainers & the productions, networks that supported them were silenced. Rules that put muzzles on our voices, preventing us from promoting, sharing the projects we poured our hearts into and acknowledging the beautiful, hardworking talents we worked alongside. On a personal note, 2023 Blessed me with several amazing opportunities, 2 of which I feel are some of my strongest work, fueling my desire, excitement to promote & shout from the rooftops! Instead, thanks to the strike… Silence. If a machine like Barbie or an Oppenheimer, the talent’s voices are not as necessary for the “work begets work” policy to matter but for us, it’s everything. So why the trip down memory lane now? Not a fan of chaos and chose to unplug from 4 months of noise & let the dust settle. Now time to get the baggage off my chest so I could stop being salty, pay my union dues 🤭 and focus on doing the work that I 💖 So here we go…. onward & upward!!!! Here’s to an Amazing year of abundant Peace, Love & Blessings 🙏🏾 Ps… I dunno bout ya’ll but ain’t that baby kinda creepy now? IJS 😂
