I wasted a lot of time trying to turn myself into someone I was not. For many years I was told that to succeed as an Actor I was going to have to change who I really was. I was too fat, too ethnic, too tall, too much of everything and yet somehow never enough. As a biracial person I was sometimes told that trying to “pass as white” would be my best chance. Wear whiter foundation, dye your hair blond, dress more conservatively, don’t wear jewelry or colours that hint at your actual heritage, lose the hips, the curves the…confidence. For years I tried, both literally and figuratively, to “fit the mold”. To look like the Women around me who I was told were the “ideal”. But guess what? That was never going to happen. The game was rigged because you can’t make yourself into something you’re not. And if you try, you loose more than weight and colour along the way.
So now my friends, I’m LEANING IN! I’m embracing and exploring and celebrating who a REALLY AM! How I want to dress, how I want to do my hair, what colours make me HAPPY what clothes make me feel most like ME! “Too Latina”, “Too Colourful”, “Too out there”? Go F#*K yourself. I waited too many years to find real joy in expressing myself and I’m never going back! And don’t worry, if you don’t like it, you don’t have to. I Love Me. And that’s all that matters.❤️

#measureyourpowernotyourdresssize 💪🏽❤️ I am so extremely lucky to have an incredibly positive and supportive Community at my Gym. But before I found it I struggled a lot with Gym culture. I tried so many places where it seemed more like an active-wear fashion show, or a pick up bar, than a place to train and sweat. If one more Dude asked me if I wanted his “help” with my weights or gave me unwanted notes on my “form”, I was going throw a kettle bell.🙄 No one should ever have to feel ogled, watched or unsafe in a public space. And if you are feeling that way, it’s time to make a change. You deserve better. In those days I Loved when I was travelling for work and would find myself completely alone in a Hotel gym with nothing but some quiet, my favourite equipment and some time to just be me and do whatever I wanted to do. Baby Steps! Yes, exercise and fitness are important. But so is REST!!! Rest is so key to all areas of our Health. I got Bronchitis over the Holidays and am now on week FOUR and round two of antibiotics and steroid puffers. It knocked me out. And when our bodies are sick they need to REST. After the first two weeks, I started to have those toxic thoughts. “If I don’t exercise I’m going to gain weight”, “If I don’t exercise I’m going to lose muscle tone”. Well…Sure! Maybe a little. Because you are SICK and need to HEAL and focus on other, more important areas of your HEALTH right now! And if you go back to regular activities too quickly. If you deprive your body of the rest and nutrition that you need, you will get sicker. You will not heal. And that is NOT “wellness” that is losing sight of what really matters. So I took the time off for ACTIVE REST. Read that again, ACTIVE REST, because in this culture we have to really be conscious of making sure we get enough. And now I’m starting back to my old routines, taking it one Baby Step at a time, and listening to my Body, to what it needs right NOW. Not judging it for how the healing time may have changed it. Don’t let anyone tell you that pushing yourself through illness and pain is admirable. One of the absolute best parts of my job is the opportunity to travel. The opportunity to see parts of the world, and even of my own country, that I may never have explored otherwise. As you all know, one of my biggest passions is hiking and trail running. There’s no better feeling for me than being outside in the open air, in the trees and the rocks and the waters, heart pumping in my ears and the sounds of nature around me. I Frickin’ LOVE it! Well, in October I had the extreme pleasure of shooting #dyinginplainsight in Alberta, Canada, home to some of the most Beautiful Mountains in the World. And I definitely made the best of it!🤣Every day I could I was out there hiking and climbing my way to the top of some of the most amazing mountains with the most incredible views you could ever hope to see. And I was just so incredibly Happy! I am forever grateful that I have these chances to combine my passions. That the work I Love so much brings me these opportunities to also explore my other Loves and see Beautiful, new things. ❤️Making this movie meant more to me than I can put into words. I play a character named Kim whose trauma and societal pressure have led her down the road of Eating Disorders and toxic “Wellness” fads. But worse than that, she passes these dangerous habits and ideas of beauty and “health” onto her daughter. The crazy thing is that, even though we are so different in many ways, I recognized and understood Kim because she is basically the voice in my head that I’ve been fighting most of my Life. The voice that says “If you just fight your Body”, “If you just change how you look”, “If you just work harder”, “If you just do what it takes to fit the mold”…then you’ll be happy. Then the world will accept and Love you. It’s Bullshit of course, but it’s hammered into our heads at such a young age that many of us grow up never knowing what it is to live without a feeling of not being good enough the way we are. And we do dangerous, sometimes life threatening things to meet impossible standards of beauty that were created to control us and take away our power. I hope this movie helps people to see that they are not alone.❤️Thank you to the INCREDIBLE @raffavirago for her honest, vulnerable and powerful performance as Morgan. We all need a safe way to explore and release our emotions. There is power in anger. There is power in sadness. There is Great Power in allowing ourselves to accept and feel the pain we are experiencing. As Women and members of marginalized groups we are often taught at a very young age that showing our sadness is a sign of our weakness. That expressing our anger shows a lack of control. These messages are just another way to keep us quiet. To shame us into staying silent. We have a lot to be angry about and it is healthy and necessary to exercise and express those feelings. When all else fails…I go to a safe space and slam things. I lift, I slam, I push and I make all the sounds that my gut wants to make.
