Another 50,000 people each year have unexpected outcomes of labor and delivery with serious short- or long-term health consequences. Every pregnancy-related death is tragic, especially because two in three of them are preventable. Recognizing urgent maternal warning signs and providing timely treatment and quality care can prevent many pregnancy-related deaths. Racial Disparities Exist Black women are three times more likely to die from a pregnancy-related cause than White women. Multiple factors contribute to these disparities, such as variation in quality healthcare, underlying chronic conditions, structural racism, and implicit bias. Social determinants of health prevent many people from racial and ethnic minority groups from having fair opportunities for economic, physical, and emotional health.

Caption : 🚨sexual assault and medical racism 🚨 Dr. Cargle was a @UCLA medical student when she reports being forced to watch her supervising surgeon at @harbor_ucla sexually assault his unconscious, anesthetized Black male patient. Dr. Cargle authored an “anonymous” report about the sexual assault/gun. But after reading the details of her claim, the surgeon was able to ID her as the whistleblower. The hospital was made aware but chose not to investigate, despite previous reports of his sexual misconduct. She is now being terminated from her LAC+USC Orthopaedic surgery residency. NONE of this is okay. This must be investigated IMMEDIATELY and the attending must be held to account. Dr. Cargle deserves our protection and support above all else at this time. Tragically, this program is now supporting 5 families. Black mothers are still dying of pregnancy-related issues and complications at a rate 4x higher than white women. Bobbie For Change has been lobbying to pass The Black Maternal Health Momnibus Act of 2021 (AKA The Momnibus), which is made up of 13 bills that comprehensively address the maternal health crisis in America.
