Benjamin Millepied Instagram – When we considered the theme of this issue – movement – a choreographer cover star seemed like the ideal fit, but who? There’s been something of an unveiling of choreography in recent years, once very much situated behind the scenes, choreographers are becoming stars in their own right, from the minds behind international spectacles like Rihanna’s Super Bowl performance, or Beyoncé’s Renaissance tour, to viral kids on TikTok. But one choreographer has been established in our consciousness since his breakthrough performance in the critically acclaimed and Academy Award-winning 2010 film, Black Swan. Benjamin Millepied, who served as both choreographer and star, bringing unprecedented attention to both ballet and its choreography. We considered shooting on a stage, or a studio, but Benjamin’s artistry called for more. And so it came to be, in a French commune, near the historic Fontainebleau Palace and sundry surrounding chateaus, in an otherworldly sea of white sandstone, quarried for centuries sitting starkly against the verdant Fontainebleau Forest, a colossal transparent structure created as a foil to the choreographed movement of @benjaminmillepied and @richardmille.
