a thought that used to lead me to text Judith
Judy was one of the first, older disability activists to feel like family.
After a long conversation on disability advocacy, I asked her what made her happy. She said out of the hundreds of interviews she has done, she was never asked that.
Since that day, every now and then (out of the blue), I would text her five things that I was grateful for that day. And she would, send hers back.
Sometimes we wouldn’t say anything more. That was enough.
Because to be disabled and joyful in this world is worth celebrating.
I still miss her smile. I still miss her care.
I never got to tell her I finally tried Junior’s cheesecake.
Perpetually learning how grief shows up for me. Yet, rewatching this archived moment of us holding space together has seemed to slightly fill some kind of hole for the time being.
Maybe I just needed to hear her tell me in some way that she loves me..
