On 24th May, 2024, the exact day of its Golden Jubilee, DIAMOND DOGS will be issued as a limited edition 50th anniversary half-speed mastered LP and a picture disc LP pressed from the same master. The first single from the album, the aforementioned ‘REBEL REBEL’, reached number 5 in the UK and the album would also reach similar heights on both sides of the Atlantic reaching number 1 in the UK and number 5 in the USA. The writing of the album was influenced by Bowie not being able to secure the rights for a theatrical production of George Orwell’s 1984 and by the work of William S. Burroughs, whom Bowie had appeared with in a two-way interview feature for Rolling Stone titled: BEAT GODFATHER MEETS GLITTER MAINMAN. The songs on the album created an urban apocalyptic scenario with Bowie appearing on the cover as a controversial half-man, half-dog hybrid painted by the Belgian artist Guy Peellaert, who used photographs as reference taken for the project by the world-renowned photographer Terry O’Neill. Since its release, tracks from DIAMOND DOGS have been covered by artists such as Beck, Tina Turner, Duran Duran, Def Leppard, Joan As Police Woman, Dead Or Alive, The Struts and many others. David Bowie Instagram – REBEL REBEL 45 IS FIFTY TODAY

“Hot tramp, I love you so…”

Though the press adverts proclaimed that it was a Valentine’s Day release, Rebel Rebel was actually issued fifty years ago today on the 15th of February 1974. The release, which had already been put back two weeks (original printed release date on demo label is Feb 1st), was an edited version of the song and a first taste from the upcoming Diamond Dogs LP, though it was considered a bit of a curveball compared to much of the music on that album. The single was backed with Queen Bitch.

It was the first release since the dissolution of The Spiders From Mars, though stylistically it may have been more at home on Aladdin Sane, with its up-tempo, Stonesy feel and with an unmistakable and instantly recognisable riff that he was more than grateful to have conjured up, later saying of it: “It’s a fabulous riff! Just fabulous! When I stumbled onto it, it was ‘Oh, thank you!’”.

The track reached #5 on the UK singles chart (Bowie’s sixth Top Five single in the UK), and even managed a placing in the US Billboard Hot 100, no doubt helped by the exclusive New York Mix, which was almost a minute and a half shorter than the regular single mix. The New York Mix was released in North America and Mexico in May 1974 backed with Lady Grinning Soul.

This second version was more urgent than the original, with a backward echo effect on the new la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la backing vocals, castanets, and more general excitement all round…more akin to the live version that would be performed shortly on the US Diamond Dogs tour.

David Bowie Instagram – JUST A GIGOLO LONDON PREMIERE 45 YEARS AGO TODAY

“Came to London town…”

The London premiere of Just a Gigolo took place on Valentine’s Day 1979.

The first image here is of Bowie with Just A Gigolo co-star Sydne Rome at a photo call at Café Royal in Regent Street.

The film’s premiere took place at the Prince Charles Cinema in Leicester Square where David is pictured with Viv Lynn.

The premiere invitation stated that twenties-style dress or black tie was compulsory.

Bowie wore a dark blue kimono with baggy grey trousers and Japanese style footwear, while his date wore Willie Brown.
