Geoff Lawton Instagram – Geoff has special plants in his garden that help other plants grow better. He calls them his “support crew” or “support species.” These plants are nitrogen-fixing legumes planted in between his garden beds. Legumes are really good at taking nitrogen from the air and putting it in the soil, which helps other plants around them grow strong and healthy. Geoff strategically pollards these legumes when there is more rainfall than evaporation, creating more space for the sun and rain to reach the new food crops. The cut growth is left on the ground to break down and further enrich the soil.
