As someone who is married to an ER doctor, I can’t but think about the perils of health care workers right now in Gaza. The Netanyahu administration’s siege of the health care system in Gaza is one of the gravest war crimes in a graveyard of war crimes against Palestinian civilians. #ceasefirenow Source @ajplus

A word on this first day of #BlackHistoryMonth.
Black students remain the primary victims of reported hate attacks in U.S. schools. It is harmful *not* to teach Black students why they are facing these attacks. Because if a Black victim of a hate attack doesn’t understand anti-Black racism, then that student can blame themselves for the attack. (They hate me because there is something wrong with me, with Black people). It is harmful for non-Black students to come to the same conclusion. (They hate Black people because there is something wrong with them). It is harmful *not* to teach Jewish and queer students why they are facing hate attacks. It is harmful not to teach students of all backgrounds why people hate Black, Jewish, and queer people. It protects students to learn about anti-Black racism, antisemitism, homophobia, and transphobia. Those censoring these subjects in classrooms, those banning books on these subjects, may have contributed to this doubling of hate attacks in U.S. schools.

I wanted to invite you into Zora Neale Hurston’s #Barracoon, into the life journey of Cudjo Lewis, a journey of a book in Cudjo’s voice that I adapted for young people. It is available in the bio link.

To think that Zora Neale Hurston and Cudjo Lewis did not live to see #Barracoon published. And now, it is a New York Times Best Seller again! 🙌🏾 I am full of gratitude for the magnificent visual artist @jazzleejohnson. I am full of thanks for my literary agent, Ayesha Pande, and my editor, Luana Horry. I am full of gratefulness for Zora’s descendants, the trustees of the @zoranealehurstontrust, who supported me in adapting #Barracoon for young readers. I am full of appreciation for the booksellers, book reviewers, event organizers, educators, and content creators who championed this book. I am full of thanks for the kids and adults who are reading or soon will be reading #Barracoon. I am full of gratitude on this first day of #BlackHistoryMonth and pouring it out to Zora and Cudjo! 🫗🙏🏾🫶🏿
From @therearenobadbooks 🙏🏾 #BookTour : Barracoon My Review: 5 stars This is an 𝗮𝗱𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻, 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱, with great language that tells firsthand the cruelty of an Atlantic Majesty who stole him from Africa by slavers at the age of nineteen and he never saw his beloved Africa again. Historical and poignant of a 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗨𝗦 𝗛𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆. A novel that should be in every school and have lessons dedicated to. And perfect release to pay homage to Black History Month. Cudjo tells Hurston who noted all the details of what he saw and experienced from the start (to explain the journey) to the tragedies that befell his family. I love the illustrations and how the dialogue is true to Cudjo’s voice. I feel like I can hear him speak. The book is appropriate for children and the incidents and horrors are well represented but told educationally. A treasure to keep and also share. . . .#middlegrade #middlegradereads #nonfiction #adaptation #kidlit #mglit #middlegradenonfiction #middlegradehistorical #middlegradebooks #middlegradelover #bookstagram #booknerd #teachers #librarians #middlegradeauthor #blackhistorymonth #lfl #childrensfiction
