Jim Baird Instagram – As we made our way further down the Stikine River into Alaska, the environment and climate became more rainforest. Most days it rained all day long. When we find a campsite for the night the first thing I need to do is start a fire for my family. We’ve been paddling all day long and we’re drenched to the bone.
In wet conditions it can be almost impossible to find dry wood. I usually like to find standing dead wood that is off the ground so it’s not rotting from being damp. And sometimes standing dead wood can be wet too. I found a dead spruce tree that was standing and it was bone dry on the inside. You have to split them down by batoning kindling, whittling fine tinder and splitting the larger pieces down.
