The boy feels the loss everywhere he goes, until he visits his grandfather’s tailor shop and finds that something warm and memorable still lingers. Curling up in his grandfather’s jacket, the boy falls asleep wrapped in the familiar scent, and awakens into a cosmic sense of passage and transformation: “He must have come from someplace far, far away. A place across the universe, full of dazzling stars. I bet that is where grandpa has gone.” 🪐🧶💫
With this realization, we as readers are invited into the vast expanse of a double gatefold in which the grandfather finally appears, facing the boy across the book’s gutter, across what is now a divide. Standing on his own planet, no longer absent but clearly present once again, the grandfather returns to his grandson through one of the most beautiful and sensitive human abilities of all––the ability to infuse absence with presence through acts of storytelling. 🌟
