Riyadh Khalaf Instagram – Major gratitude post alert. Getting to smash together my passions for science, aviation and story-telling on telly is a dream come true. History will be made tomorrow as Virgin Atlantic take to the skies with ‘Flight 100’, the first time an airliner will fly across the Atlantic Ocean using nothing but 100% SAF (sustainable aviation fuel)! Before I board flight 100, today I visited Birmingham’s Aston University to see first-hand the fascinating process of how sustainable aviation fuel is created using waste products like used cooking oil and household waste. The fuel gives off 70% fewer emissions when burned compared to regular (Jet A-1) jet fuel. Combined with approved carbon capture technology that can be uplifted to 100% emission reduction. Incredible! Climate and aviation experts around the world agree that this liquid gold is the only answer to decarbonise the aviation industry. Electric, hydrogen and hydrogen-electric technology isn’t advanced enough to make a real impact just yet. Tomorrow’s flight will provide proof to those in power that this fuel works, is safe and needs investment at government level to start being produced in vast enough quantities where it can be swapped out in place of regular fuel and not cost the current 5-10 times as much.
