THIS on ITV & ITVX. A gorgeous, brittle, sharp, hilarious comedy drama about the most unlikely couple, brought together by chance, accident and this terrible, terrible world. So funny, even as it makes you ache. A hidden gem in a noisy schedule, you’ll love these two. The most glorious cast, Katherine Parkinson & @youssefkerkourofficial, cast by @ri_mcd written by @danafainaru2014 & @hwright3766, directed by David Sant ♥️ @quaystreetproductions
Danny and Guy have been friends for 20 years, and head off into Manchester Pride together… except Danny wants more than friendship. Is it time to tell the truth? This is lovely, funny, kind and truthful. Manchester is described so well, this book walks past my house twice! And depictions of Pride are vivid and hilarious: “Danny passes a group of men in matching gold hot pants who are mixing themselves mimosas from supermarket value-brand cava and cartons of Capri-Sun.” I was expecting a simple will-they-won’t-they but it’s wiser than that, laced with generations of gay shame, and heading towards a more contemporary ending, challenging who we are, and why, and how we can change. A lovely book.

“It is interesting how people endure things.” Lucy Barton is taken out of New York to escape the pandemic, and discovers a new life with ex-husband William. The third Lucy Barton novel, and the first proper Covid novel I’ve read – no, come back! It’s amazing how much I’d forgotten about those days and fascinating to see it laid out so clearly. Lucy’s voice is a miracle of precision and understatement, sometimes certain, sometimes trembling with doubt, and there’s a real joy in this as love floods into her life once more. But Elizabeth Strout has always kept an eye on the wider world – the fact that Lucy was born in poverty is never forgotten – and a new fear edges into this. The fear of November 2024. I finished this book weeks ago, and it’s haunted me ever since; Lucy sees things with a frightening insight. A brilliant, vital book.

“What I am trying to say is that for a few minutes I had what almost felt like a vision: that there was a deep, deep unrest in the country and that the whispering of a civil war seemed to move around me like a breeze I could not quite feel but could sense. We got our ice cream and we left, and I told William what I had felt and he said, ‘I know.’”

The life of Roland Baines, passing though history – from the Cuban missile crisis to Covid – all the while haunted by memories and wondering who he is. The range and density of this is extraordinary, it feels like an entire life being lived. Like memory, it slides in time, back and forth, even vaulting into the stories of parents and grandparents. But everything keeps circling back to young Roland and his piano teacher, and the abuse that leads him to live “an unchosen life.” A powerful combination of history and experience, which turns away from anger and finds compassion and forgiveness instead.

“When he asked himself if he wished none of it had happened he did not have a ready answer. That was the nature of the harm.“
