Ama K. Abebrese Instagram – Happy International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month. 👑 This work by @jeremiahquarshie is entitled ‘AMA YAA’ a painting in which he reimagines Yaa Asantewaa, the Queen Mother of Ejisu of the Ashanti Empire. In 1900, she led the Ashanti war also known as the Yaa Asantewaa War of Independence, against the British Empire. The painting makes allusions to the relationship between the Asahanti and the British empire which results in the creation of a new country called Ghana. This is signified by the muse of the painting, Ama K. Abebrese, carrying a child who also shows physical signs of a mixed heritage – a post colonial reference to the birth of a country that adopted a mix of local and British ways in lifestyle and governance.
