Amy Shira Teitel Instagram – Jack Swigert, the CLP of Apollo 13, was a test pilot for North American Aviation and worked on the Rogallo Wing project, which was a sort of two-lobed sail that popped out from the spacecraft so it could glide to a landing. The idea was to get away from costly and dangerous splashdowns, and make vehicles reusable. It didn’t work, but a small-scale vehicle was built and flew somewhat successfully too late in the program to actually be tested on a mission.
