Carla Valentine Instagram – Continuing my Valentine human remains theme is this “romantic” tale: This is The Loving Cup from the Scotland Yard Crime Museum (formerly The Black Museum), a place I’m privileged to have spent time in, not only researching “Christie-era” crimes, but also crimes *I’d* worked on. I chatted about what this is on the fab @hardcorelisting podcast a while ago. It’s a silver-mounted Loving Cup made from a human cranium (a loving cup is a bit like a love seat ..or an alibi… basically it’s meant to be shared…) Anyway, according to their records it dates from 1807/8 and comes from a young Irish titled lady. She’d made the ‘mistake’ of becoming pregnant to a lower class man, was thrown out of her home, deserted by her lover and ended up in a life of prostitution. Around 20 years later she welcomed a party of students into the brothel, recognised one of them as the son of her former lover and killed him out of revenge. She was hanged as a punishment and her skull was made into a Loving Cup, which bears stains of wine inside – so it has been used for drinking. I’ve no idea why her skull was made into a cup 🤷 I don’t think Scotland Yard do either, but I’ll ask them next time I’m there doing research. It was quite common to turn body parts of prisoners into ‘useful’ items though: for example the notebook made of the skin of William Burke of ‘Burke & Hare’ and also the shoes made from the skin of Big Nose Parrot aka Big Nose George. I’ve posted those items before, if you scroll down my feed. ❤️💀
