Carla Valentine Instagram – Sound on 😉 Every February I focus on the heart in anatomy and pathology, as well as other ‘Valentine’ related topics, because there are so many stunning specimens, models and plastinates to share. I call it my Bloody Valentine Countdown.
🫀
This heart model is by Louis Auzoux who lived 1797-1880. As a medical student in Paris, Auzoux wanted to come up with a way to study human anatomy despite the shortage of cadavers to dissect. He developed his own secret papier-mâché recipe, which also contained cork and clay, and began crafting some amazing anatomical models, like this one of the heart & vessels. The models were inexpensive compared to other modelling media, such as wax (papier-mâché was just a tenth of the price) and they were sturdy enough to be repeatedly taken apart for study. With financial support from the French state, Auzoux founded a factory to produce models and became a huge commercial success.
This heart is slightly over life-size and it’s one of the finest examples of a 19th century commercial anatomical model ever made. (📸 Alex Peck; 📝some info from an article written by an old lecturer of mine, Dr Anna Maerker).
