While my character “Addie” in Self Made is a fantastic nemesis to Madame CJ Walker, she is fictional and really serves to drive the story forward in a way that keeps the drama moving. The real “Annie” was an incredible entrepreneur & philanthropist in her own right who you should know about if you don’t already. I encourage you all to learn more about her and all of the characters in #selfmade by delving deeper! I encourage that whenever you watch historical drama and storytelling.
I also appreciate some of the perceptive comments being posted around the subject of colorism. I have a lot of personal thoughts on how the subject comes across now that I’ve seen the finished version of the show. I suppose I am most excited by the fact that the show is sparking long overdue conversations about how these sorts of subtle & often overlooked issues are handled within the culture and by Hollywood.
