Deirdre Lovejoy Instagram – Every Tuesday I am celebrating actors I love!
Today I am spotlighting Deirdre Lovejoy, an actress with decades of credits which span screens big and small and stages around the country. And each character gives us a little more of a glimpse into Deirdre’s soul. She doesn’t do anything half-assed. If she’s got the job, you’ve got her 100% dedication. Recently I had the joy of seeing Deirdre back on the stage at the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles in POTUS. In this rip-roaring comedic satire, written by a woman, directed by a woman, and starring 7 very distinct women, Deirdre expertly carves out her little piece of the puzzle as “Bernadette.” But what I appreciated the most is the commitment to “play”, watching Deirdre’s demeanor and relationship shift with every character she encounters. Bravo!
I asked Deirdre a few questions and here is what she had to say:
WHAT IS A MEMORABLE AUDITION STORY YOU HAVE?
My first professional audition was for the public theater Shakespeare in the Park. It was for Henry IV and Joseph Papp was directing. He stopped me in the middle of my audition and said “we will engage you.” I called my agent and told him I’d book the job. That never happened again!
WHAT ROLE OR PROJECT THAT YOU’VE DONE ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?
On television probably being a part of the cast of THE WIRE. On stage playing Lady Macbeth at the Old Globe, perhaps, or Lucky Guy on Broadway.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE AN ACTOR JUST STARTING OUT?
Create your own work. Don’t wait for someone to give you a job. And don’t let anyone telling you NO interrupt the flow of your creative energy.
WHAT GOAL DO YOU STILL WANT TO ACHIEVE?
I’d love to expand my theatrical repertoire, of course, win a Tony Award, and maybe settle down as the Desk Sargent on a new David Simon TV show for a while. But until then I’m living the dream.…really. I am.
Thank you Deirdre for sharing with us! And I look forward to many more complex and entertaining performances in the future! Please check out her bio in the comments below.
