I’ll be the first to admit that I’m a pretty sensitive person. I like to say that I feel so deeply because of how I was raised, my personal traumas, and simply because I truly care. But when I get hurt by someone’s actions or words, I’ve recently learned what it means to give the situation “space.” Before I react or internalize whatever someone has done to me, I try to give space to observe how their actions are a reflection of their own internal dialogue. I give space in hopes that I don’t take things so personally. It’s not until after I’ve made space, that I allow myself to feel my own feelings. But I’ve learned that by giving the situation space emotionally, I have actively detached myself, so I can protect my own internal dialogue. So, if you’re going through something with someone, maybe try to give space for yourself to see the situation, first, for what it is. That may help you free yourself from getting caught with unnecessary baggage.
