Lilly Singh Instagram – It’s time to prove to the world… I can’t run or jump 👀😂 but jokes aside… vulnerable post 👇🏽

Kids of immigrants across all cultures, but especially South Asians, all joke about being raised by the question, “what will people think?” We think it’s silly. We think we’re above that. We believe in boundaries!

Except, not really. As an adult, I’ve had to confront the reality that I do in fact often care about what people think. After years of hearing this question & HATING it, I find myself repeating it out of habit.

3 years ago, the @nba invited me to participate in the Celebrity All-Star Game… and I said no. Since I was a kid, I’ve had mega sports anxiety. So even though I consider this a bucket list item, I said no because I was so scared of embarrassing myself. And I’ve regretted it ever since because I know in my heart, I said no because… ”what will people think?”

But recently, I’ve been on a mental & spiritual journey. I’ve been unlearning what doesn’t serve me and it’s required some painfully honest reflection. And so when the NBA asked me again to be in the Celebrity Game this year, I knew I had to say yes.

My goal is to treat this game as an opportunity for growth. Not growth in basketball or athletics or even publicity, but growth in developing a mindset that serves me and most importantly… growth in self love. I have one aim for this game, and it is to genuinely have FUN. I don’t care if I score a single basket. I don’t care if I shoot 10 air balls. I don’t care who says what about me on the internet. I just want to prove to myself that “what people think” does not need to govern my life. I want to remind myself that it’s important to do things for me. I want to reclaim that power.

So, I’m headed to Indiana today to play in the NBA Celebrity All-Star Game this Friday. And I plan to have a blast. And for anyone else who struggles with the trauma of “what will people think” I hope this serves as a reminder that the answer can be, “it doesn’t matter.”

This one is for the kids who were scared of gym 💜💪🏽
