This is the scene from In The Heights that would bring me to tears. Abuela Claudia making her transition in the 191 Tunnel that played such a huge role in my childhood. That tunnel was basically my backyard as 191 was my train stop having grown up on Wadsworth Ave in the 190s.
As kids we would write Graffiti in that tunnel, fight and wild out in that tunnel. My boy Ed Corporan, Rest In Peace, lost his life in that tunnel on Christmas Day 1994. That tunnel has seen some things.
But in the film, it looked resplendent, absolutely breathtaking. Now this scene has so much more resonance. The tunnel was quite literally whitewashed but we will have proper and local street art in the tunnel once again. We are not powerless. Mark my words…
