I was 13 when I first read James Baldwin’s short story, “Sonny’s Blues”. His writing made me feel as though I was watching a movie, as I flipped through the pages of my 9th grade English text book• and in the past ten years, I’ve often turned to Baldwin’s works as a way of giving voice to feelings that’s many times seem indescribable and intangible. This moment is no different • and as I ponder the letter he wrote to Dr. Angela Davis while she was imprisoned and facing attacks from President Nixon and FBI Director Hoover, the highest ranking US officials • With a simplicity and eloquence that reads like poetry, Baldwin identifies how the most dangerous thing we can think is that our struggles are separate. Solidarity is a knowingness that the pursuit of equity and freedom anywhere in the world is also personal pursuit of that same freedom. “If they take you in the morning, they will be coming for us that night.”
