Caption : Monty Howell is the eldest son of Leonard Howell, the Founding Father of the Rastafari movement. Leonard Howell purchased 500 acres of land to create a safe space for ex slaves seeking a new way of life off the plantation. For 16 years, Pinnacle was fully self sufficient from the farming of fruits, vegetables and ganja. When he was 5 years old, his mother was killed and his father framed for her murder. He recalls standing in the Spanish Town court room watching his father from behind the barriers while standing on his tip toes. “My father was a very forthright man. Even when they tried to tear him down and belittle him in front of the nation, he never bowed his head. He knew he was a threat to them, a free mind in a colonial world. He never hurt my mother. My father wasn’t even on the Pinnacle grounds when it happened. I watched as the State took turns trying to twist the truth, eventually sending him to the asylum on many occasions to de-stabilize the growing movement. He had gone to Kingston on a business trip as he often did when she died. She went missing for days, and when they found her, she had to be buried her on the spot even before he came back home. For years, I remember going to her grave side and sitting under that tree for hours just to feel close to her. Children are the real victims of political violence.“ Today 80 plus years later, when he visits Pinnacle, the trees and rocks that once marked this memory have been destroyed and sold to the highest bidder. In May 1954, the JLP government destroyed the community and scattered hundreds of families, destitute in the streets. Pinnacle lands have been stolen by private developers with full knowledge and ultimate participation of the Jamaican government. Private homes now cover the hills where the first RasTafari community existed, and still the Jamaican government continues to deny their responsibility in restoring the legacy and birthplace of the RasTafari movement. Caption : It was a typical Jamaican Summer day in the 90’s, and we were playing outdoor on my Nana’s farm, wondering through the high bushes in search of adventure. There was this beautiful black bull that we would always tease from afar, even though we knew better. On this day, we decided to enter its territory, unaware that he hadn’t been properly secured after grazing. We threw a few stones at him, and ran around his playground making fun. He observed us intently for a few moments before he gave chase and I fell trying to get away. Ingemar was a clear distance ahead, but he turned back to pick me up and distract the bull while I ran to safety. Fearless and confident, he danced with the beautiful beast, then skillfully scaled the fence. We laughed until tears fell from our happy eyes as we cleaned thorns from our shorts and wiped blood from scars… another successful adventure on the battlefield. A favourite memory, one of many. Caption : A Beautiful Truth: I’ve never been able to fit into any standards or expectations ascribed to me. I’ve always and only wanted to be who I want to be. I chose to trod these roads, defiantly, with aspirations to discover the roots of our humanity through these immersive experiences that challenge, redefine, redesign, sometimes offend but then again remind me to persist beyond the defects of this virtual reality. When @rastaasoulsjourney first premiered 10 years ago, the fight against RasTafari culture and livity was raging. Our sacrament, Ganja/ Cannabis, was still illegal across the majority of the world. Many film festivals and television platforms denied us a space because of our open discussions on screen about the healing and medicinal values of this plant that was criminalized to safeguard colonialist and capitalist virtues and reigns of oppression. So we took it to the streets, community centres, corporate offices and boardrooms. We created classrooms everywhere we could.✨ On August 13 at @danielsspectrum we will celebrate the 10 year anniversary of RasTa, A Soul’s Journey, a film that has brought light, hope, visibility, education and direction for people of all ages and races all around the world who were also on a journey with me, like me, through me. Caption : Eyes wide open, I saw @marvel #BlackPanther a few days ago alongside my sistrens dressed in our Afrofuturistic gear, like many others in the audience, heart open to perceive this monumental film. #wakandaforever… I get it. I embrace the many conversations around Africa and the diaspora that have been stimulated and re-invigorated at this time, and the images of brothers and sisters being bold and beautiful in our Roots. I watched and revelled in this future where an African King, who rules a Sovereign African country that has never known colonization, is able to use his super powers to fight for justice, and take the initiative to bridge the gap between the continent and the diaspora. As I allowed the experience to ruminate in my spirit and mind, I couldn’t shake the feeling… I know this story. I recognized the work and even the wants of the piece, but I know this story… The Black Panther – The Lion of Judah. Emperor Haile Selassie I, King of the sovereign African Nation Ethiopia, that has never been colonized, also aspired to develop its sacred knowledge and innovate technology for the advancement of humanity. His Majesty too has super powers that he has used to inspire and defend Africans in the diaspora. FUN FACT: In 1966, the same year that Marvel was inspired to create the Black Panther, Haile Selassie I visited Jamaica and purchased land to build a high school. He is the only African King in History to have done this. How much of this Afrofuturistic story that we are telling today has already been written in pages of History? Caption : When I was born, both my feet were slightly curved inward. At 2 years old, I had to get corrective shoes to help straighten my feet. It must have been a challenging time for you @swalk_12018 as a new mother, to help your young daughter to build the confidence she would need to walk on her own. I don’t remember the metal braces against my legs, or the awkward stares from strangers. I don’t remember the times I fell down, or how much energy it took to get up. But I do remember how excited you would get when I told you about a new discovery, or an idea I had. And how you would always win Mothers race on Sports Day with barely a trace of sweat while the other mothers struggled to keep up. Thank you Ma, for Mothering us with so much defiance and grace. Caption : Last week this time, myself, @directedbykells @we.want.ev @fabcevolution, and other volunteers and collective members of @wehavetherighttoberight with the support of hands and hearts from all over the world, were able to personally distribute over 400 lbs of aid to survivors of Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas🇧🇸. We visited only 5 shelters of many, guarded by the National security forces, where we saw almost 2500 evacuees, 90% of whom are Haitian brothers and sisters who have lost everything they called home in a foreign country. This sentence barely scratches the surface of this undocumented reality. Our assessment of the efforts on the ground by those who can is highly disappointing. The local response simply isnt good enough, and more than often biased. It is an overwhelming situation for anyone to face, especially for those who have become refugees within these moments, and find themselves at the mercy of a system that doesnt recognize them as nationals, rather second class citizens at best. In moments of great disaster and distress, what is the protocol? Does it empower greater sentiments of nationality, or does it submit to the urgent call for humanity to prevail? … A reminder that we must become something for which our education and environment has ill-prepared us. Too much petty prejudice when Each One can Reach One🙏🏾 We are presently strategizing for the next trip to continue to build support systems, collaborating with local organizations to empower the underseved communities how we can💜 So much things to say, but more to do. Caption : We are living amidst systems of thought that perpetuate a state of sub-conscious trauma and division. Arrogance, Fear & suspicion instigate decisions and circumstances of irreparable damage. We will not be victims when we can Right the story. My Daddy says to advance Intellect over emotion, and my Mom says we Rebel with Love. Grandma says Justice is a one word prayer. I pray these moments will be more than a moment. We’ve listened to the 911 call 1. The Neighbour reported that a black man @komiolaf was loading luggage into a car, that was her primary target. She was never in fear for her life or that a serious offence was happening. @directedbykells and I were also assumed to be criminals. When she noticed my assistant and photographer/ Filmmaker @ahutchphoto who is white, her tone changed. She soon after remarked that maybe everything is okay. She was being nosy and racist and it was enough to set all this into motion. 2. The 911 respondent escalated the situation to a burglary in progress without properly investigating the neighbour’s claim. 3. The police responded with standard militarized protocol;7 vehicles and a helicopter on the way, denied our truth and sought to further embarrass us at their press conference. 4. The Mayor, who at first apologized to us, retracted her statements emphasizing the value of seniors in society and their safety. Totally distracting from the fact that this lady has placed several racially biased calls that have possibly jeopardized many other lives throughout the course of her life. There have been no apologies. Sorry could never be enough anyway. Who exactly is responsible for what happened and what are the next steps? Caption : Reminder to self: We must Rebel against any system or structure which distracts and misinforms our youth. One of the most liberating moments for me this week on the We Will Rize Together project at the Haile Selassie High School, was working with a bunch of youth from the Payne land community who came to volunteer, and see what little treasures they could find. I explained that we were fixing the library and saving some books, but some would be destroyed. I wanted to be clear with them that books aren’t garbage, but there is great symbolism in tearing up and discarding a bunch of old, outdated neo-colonial literature. The kind that teaches our children how to grow cotton, and others with images that portray the Africans who were stolen and sold into slavery as savage and backward. Books that have done nothing to empower I&I sense of self. @ms_laurynhill song ‘I find it hard to say…Rebel’ kept repeating loud in my head. ‘I find it hard to say that everything will be alright. Cause my own eyes can see through all your false pretenses. As history repeats so foul that you can taste it…. We must destroy in order to rebuild. Wake up! You might as well. Or are you satisfied? Are you satisfied?… Rebel!’ Until the curriculum reflects more about who we are and all the things we have been, we will never be who we are supposed to be. A people without the knowledge of their past history and culture is like a tree without roots Garvey says. I’m still writing this message in English, the language of the colonizers. The second language I was taught in school is Spanish, because Colombus and his friends never really left Jamaica. I don’t know my Mother tongue, or which village in which country in Africa my ancestors came from. I’m still fighting to remember all the things they wanted us to forget.
