Caption : Bright Eyes and the pups huddled together for warmth after a big meal of muskoxen. These quiet moments seemed to be the happiest times for the wolves. Bellies full, surrounded by their family and content to sleep for the next 12 hours. I think we can all relate to that happiness and comfort – amongst loved ones with ample food and security to rest. It’s the universal desire of all social mammals. Learn more about this family of wolves in the @natgeo magazine article and 3-part series for @natgeowild that both published in 2019 – links in my bio. Caption : Today, March 21st, marks the 25 year anniversary of the first wolves released into the wilds of Yellowstone National Park. It took decades of hard work by a passionate group of Conservationists, NGOs and politicians to make this restoration effort possible. Thank you for your efforts. Under the bipartisan supported Endangered Species Act, the gray wolf became protected in the lower-48 in 1974. The loss of Wilderness and Wildthings was felt across the nation at that time and the gray wolf was the final piece to restore the Yellowstone Ecosystem to its historic glory – before Europeans and market hunters/trappers changed the West forever. Today, Yellowstone’s roughly 100 wolves represent one of the great restoration stories of the last century. I hope you all have the chance to one day hear a wild wolf pack howling in the distance. If you’re interested to learn more, there are dozens of books on the topic, but a few notable titles are : Decade of the Wolf, Of Wolves and Men, and American Wolf @yellowstonenps @nationalparkservice #wolves #wolf #mrblue #yellowstone #yellowstonenationalpark

Caption : The standoff. A one-year-old arctic wolf, known as Grey Mane, looks back for direction from the rest of his pack while a herd of muskoxen form a defensive rosette nearby. Wolves can be patient hunters, especially when faced with this cooperative defense from their main prey on Canada’s Ellesmere Island – known in the Inuktitut language of the far North as Umingmak Nuna or Muskox Land. Muskoxen have evolved to work together to achieve what they cannot alone – just like the wolves. While the muskoxen work together to protect themselves, the wolves work together in order to wear down their prey. Both behaviors from prey and predator are inextricably linked – the muskoxen wouldn’t be a different animal if not for the wolf and vice versa. Grey Mane is the largest wolf in the pack I followed, but he still needed to learn how to be a master hunter. Hence, why he’s stepping back from this herd of muskoxen and looking to his older relatives for guidance. Are they lying down or pushing forward? Are they intently focused on their prey or blinking slowly as they look around? These are the behaviors Grey Mane is watching for and others as he learns the ways of how to be a successful wolf in the High Arctic. There’s a link in my bio to watch the 3-part series on Grey Mane and his family called Kingdom of the White Wolf – check it out if you’re interested to learn more about wolves and this island in the North. #kingdomofthewhitewolf #wolf #arcticwolf #nature #wild #hunting #predator #prey #whitewolf #arctic #canada #animals #wildlife #dogstagram #earth

Caption : This is a story about wolves that exist in a wilderness without competition with humans for the same food sources – wild game or livestock – and to show them for the intelligent family driven social mammals that they are. Since there is no wolf hunting in this area of Ellesmere Island, wolves view humans in a passive manner, rather than a fearful one. This allows for unparalleled access to their day-to-day lives like nowhere else on earth. My goal for this story is to remind us that wolves are complex social mammals that exist in nearly the same family structures as humans and engage in many of the same behaviors: playing, mourning, social learning, and hunting. All this to say, that while wolves around the world are continually vilified and killed at will, here on Ellesmere, they are free to live out their lives free from the report of a rifle and the bite of a trap. They exist as the key apex predators that they are, managing the prey species that in turn brings balances the ecosystem. I’m posting imagery and stories from my article in the current issue of National Geographic Magazine (@natgeo) about a family of wild Arctic wolves living on Ellesmere Island, Canada’s furthest northern landmass. The story focuses on a family of 10 wolves (6 adults and 4 pups) that I spent 1.5 months photographing and filming. The motivation for this project came out of my experiences trying to document the lives of gray wolves in Yellowstone and never feeling like I was able to do so because those wolves have a healthy fear of humans. Every wolf pack in Yellowstone has lost a pack member to hunting, so they have a necessary fear of humans. Please follow along as I continue to post images from this assignment and check out the link in my bio to the digital article – Inside the harsh lives of wolves living at the top of the world – written by Neil Shea @neilshea13 #wolf #arcticwolf #nature #wild #hunting #predator #prey #whitewolf #kingdomofthewhitewolf #arctic #canada #animals #instadaily #instagood

Caption : A six week old wild Arctic wolf pup peeks at a remote camera from behind her father’s leg on the remote Canadian island known in Inuktitut as Umingmak Nuna, meaning “land of muskoxen.” In just a few weeks, this young pup will outgrow the den life and will start to follow the adults into the unknown. It will begin to learn about its vast home range and the sights and smells that will become its life for the years to come. She will learn from her parents how to survive in this harsh environment and eventually, how to hunt the mighty muskoxen. There’s a link in my bio to learn more about these wolves – both in a @natgeo magazine article in the September issue and a 3-part TV series now streaming.

The pack had been traveling, but the four pups grew tired (swipe left to see the pups). The wolves with the tired young legs flopped into a furry pile at a rendezvous site while the rest of the pack continued. One Eye and Bright Eyes doubled back to check on the pups. All was well. Watch to the end for a pretty funny interaction between mom and this solo pup getting stuck in the den. I love these little moments between these wild families that take place everyday all over the world. These familial bonds are what sustains all social mammals, ourselves included. Caption : This scene shows the yearling male known as Grey Mane chasing after a herd of Arctic hares – yes, a herd of hares! This is a followup to a @natgeo post from today. This scene was at the end of a 35 hours stint where the pack was hunting, covering a distance of 60 miles on a mission to make a fresh kill. The 12-week-old pups had begun to whimper and whine in protest. Their young legs and small bodies were exhausted. Grey Mane was a little over a year old, but he was the largest wolf in the pack by size. But he was a skilled hare hunter. These clips are from a 3 part series about this family of Arctic wolves called Kingdom of the White Wolf. Watch it streaming online – links in my bio. #wolf #arcticwolf #nature #wild #hunting #predator #prey #whitewolf #kingdomofthewhitewolf #arctic #canada #animals #instadaily #instagood

Caption : One Eye leading the Polygon Pack during a hunting foray across the Arctic tundra. What do you think of wild wolves? Should they be allowed to roam freely, as they have for millennia, or should they be allowed only in those far reaching wilderness areas where humans rarely venture? If you’re curious about wolves and wilderness, I’d like to share with you a new three-part special event premiering this Sunday, August 25, from 8-11pm ET, on Nat Geo WILD. Come join me as I travel to the High Arctic, to a landscape uninhabited by humans, in pursuit of the legendary white wolf. These wolves have never been hunted, they are fearless and free, offering a chance to learn more about this mysterious social predator. Directed by Tony Gerber @tgerber63 and filmed by Luke Padgett @severalpictures and Ronan Donovan @ronan_donovan #wolf #arcticwolf #nature #wild #hunting #predator #prey #whitewolf #kingdomofthewhitewolf #arctic #canada #animals #instadaily #instagood

Caption : Link in bio // Montana’s wildlife heritage is under serious threat at this time as a result of a series of bills being pushed through the Republican lead legislature. These bills relate to reducing Montana’s wolf population by 80%, legalizing, enacting a wolf bounty, wolf neck snares, blocking bison from future restoration, and more. There’s a link in my bio to a series of resources from press releases and how to contact Montana’s Governor and state politicians. These bills are not based on science and are harmful to wildlife and the hunting heritage of Montana.”⁣ – From a letter of Montana residents and professional wildlife biologists and managers with a total of 1,561 years of experience in wildlife management and wildlife habitat management. Caption : Yesterday, Montana’s House and the Senate voted through the below bills related to wolves and bears.⁣ There’s a link in my bio to a series of resources from press releases and how to contact Montana’s Governor and state politicians. These bills affect bison, bears (black and grizzly), wolves and the health of landscapes as a whole.⁣ These bills come from small private special interest groups in Montana and are not based upon science-based wildlife management. Hunters, anglers, wildlife watchers and citizens of Montana should be deeply concerned. ⁣ ⁣ SB 314⁣ Bill passed 64-36 on a mostly party line vote. Three Republicans broke ranks (Greef, Nave, and Putnam) to vote against the bill. ⁣ ⁣ Synopsis: Establishes the intent of wolf hunting and trapping seasons that could reduce Montana’s wolf population to a minimum of 15 breeding pairs. Would also allow FWP to authorize a single individual to kill an unlimited number of wolves. Finally, it allows night hunting on private lands with the use of artificial light or night vision scopes.⁣ ⁣ HB 468⁣ Bill passed 28-22. Three Republicans broke ranks (Molnar, Weborn, and Saloman) and voted against the bill. Brad Molnar (Billings) spoke out against the bill arguing that it could lead to the delisting of the Grizzly Bear b/c the hunt will be held in the Spring and cubs could easily die without their mothers.    ⁣ ⁣ Synopsis: Authorizes the use of dogs while hunting black bears and establishes a training season from end of spring until June 15 of that year. ⁣ ⁣ SB 337⁣ Bill passed 67-33 on a straight party line vote. ⁣  ⁣ Synopsis: Establishes that the FWP can respond to any bear that is ‘causing conflict outside of a federal recovery zone.’ Additionally, ‘If the bear is to be relocated the department may not relocate the bear.’ Which, in our reading, means the bear must be killed.⁣ ⁣ SJ 18⁣ Bill passed 68-32  Rep. Fielder offered an amendment that would extend the resolution to the entire state instead of concentrating on areas that ‘meet the criteria.’ The amendment also states that the management of Montana’s grizzly bears would exempt the delisting of grizzly bear populations from judicial review. ⁣ Link in my bio for info

Caption : Grey Mane, the one year old wolf, weighs his options during a long hunt on the tundra of the High Arctic. A large bull muskoxen stands his ground against Grey Mane and his pack. At 80 degrees north, the first sunset of the summer was on August 30th. This image was taken on September 10th at 23:40 under a beautiful twilight sky. Imagine 3 months of creating imagery without a single golden hour! It drove me crazy. But in the final weeks of this project, as my body unraveled, the colors and the wolves were magnificent. Caption : Sponsored by @visitrwanda_now // This baby mountain gorilla was born on July 1, 2018 in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda. She is part of the increasing number of mountain gorillas that have begun to rebound since the 1980s when there were only ~250 left in the Virunga Mountains. Currently, the latest census puts their numbers at 604 gorillas here in Volcanoes National Park. It is a true conservation success story and Rwanda has been at the forefront of leading that effort. The social media followers of National Geographic voted on what to name this new baby gorilla and the votes are in! In the Kwita Izina naming ceremony that took place today (September 6, 2019) at the foothills of the Virunga Mountains, I had the honor of announcing her chosen name: Intego, meaning ‘’Purpose” – chosen because her life holds purpose in Rwanda’s effort to save endangered species. Kwita Izina plays a key role in advancing conservation efforts for the endangered species and is modeled after a baby naming ceremony that has been part of Rwandan culture and tradition for centuries. // Incredible wildlife, spectacular landscapes and new adventures. Caption : The hand of our closest living relative – a wild chimpanzee. The long list of similarities that we share with chimps ranges from culture to tool use to language to family structure to infant care and many more. Just look at their hearty working hands. I’ve watched a chimp get the tip of his finger bit clean off in a skirmish and go back to feeding 10 minutes later. There hands and physique are certainly more robust than ours. A recent story just published online @natgeo about areas in Uganda where the similarities we share with chimps can lead to challenges living alongside them. Link in my bio.

Caption : This November, the people of Colorado will have the chance to vote for a viable gray wolf population to be brought back into their wild forests after a 70-year absence. In the past, the reintroduction of wolves to wild lands in the lower-48 States was decided by national policy makers in Washington. This vote is unique in that the decision would come from the public of Colorado to determine whether free-willed nature is truly valued in that state. It would be a remarkable step towards the restoration of a keystone species that would ultimately renew a historic wolf connection from the High Arctic down the spine of our continent to Yellowstone and south to Mexican border. ⁣ ⁣ I’ve committed to spreading the word and while this will be determined by Coloradans, I also feel that as Americans we all have a stake in returning wolves to appropriate public lands across the United States and in Colorado. The initial 200,000 signatures from the public of Colorado were gathered and Initiative 107 will be on the November 2020 ballot in Colorado. ⁣ ⁣ Please share this information or this post with your Colorado friends and learn more about how you can help #restorethehowl at wolfactionfund.com @rockymtnwolf and take a look at the language of Intuitive 107. To quote an article by the Center for Biological Diversity @centerforbiodiv , “Initiative 107 instructs Colorado Parks and Wildlife to develop, after public input, a science-based plan for reintroducing wolves to western Colorado by 2023.”⁣ ⁣ Other’s who are using their reach include @janefonda, @psihoyos , @leilanimunter and @alexilubomirski. #colorado #wolves #wildnature #restoration

Caption : I’m so excited to announce that the 🐺 WOLVES 🐺 Photo Exhibit will be opening on November 4th at the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson Wyoming @wildlifeartjh The exhibit explores the relationship between humans and wolves through my photographs of wild wolves in Yellowstone and the High Arctic. This is my first exhibit of any kind and I couldn’t be more thrilled and I’m so grateful for the opening to be in Jackson Wyoming. If you’re in the area in November, please come to the opening or stop by the museum through April 2023 to see the exhibit. I will post more in the coming weeks leading up to the opening. For now, put the weekend of November 4th-6th on your calendar and join for ‘Wolves and Waffles’ + my opening talk on Friday, a wold panel discussion on Saturday and the kids program on Sunday. I hope to see you there. Link in my bio for info. @NatGeoMuseum @WildlifeArtJH @natgeo

Caption : Rosa and Betty sitting comfortably high in a fig tree in western Uganda. Rosa was an interesting female because she never left her natal community of wild chimpanzees. In order to maintain genetic diversity, the females will leave their family at puberty and go find another community of chimps where they’ll live out the rest of their lives. ⁣ ⁣ I find it so fascinating that in such a social and bonded species like chimps that after 16 years the females will never see their family every again. It’s one of the least studied behaviors in wild chimps because it would require numerous neighboring communities of chimpanzees to be habituated/studied, which doesn’t exist yet. ⁣ ⁣ Learn more about chimps in the current issue of @natgeo magazine, through my posts here and by following the conservation NGO @bulindichimps⁣ .⁣⁣ .⁣⁣ .⁣⁣ .⁣⁣ .⁣⁣ #chimpanzee #chimp #chimpanzees #chimps #ape #wildlife #conservation #animals #africa #uganda #wildlifephotography #nature #natgeo⁣

Caption : Here is Moon and Mususu again, wild chimpanzees, having a little group feeding experience in a fig tree. This behavior is referenced in my previous post as ‘wadging’ and it’s basically the process of turning fruits into pulp; sucking the juice out and then discarding the dry remains of the fruit in a ‘wadge’. Moon is the 3 year old son to Mususu and he’s taking advantage of his mother’s strong chewing muscles. All apes, except humans, have a tall ridge on the top of their skull called a sagittal crest. This ridge of bone provides an attachment point for tendons which allow powerful jaw muscles greater leverage in chewing fibrous plant matter. Wild chimps can spend upwards of 8 hours chewing a day – something humans avoid by cooking our food and therefore we lost out sagittal crest over the evolutionary timescale. ⁣ ⁣ Learn more about chimps in the current issue of @natgeo magazine, through my posts here and by following the conservation NGO @bulindichimps ⁣⁣ .⁣⁣ .⁣⁣⁣⁣ .⁣⁣⁣⁣ .⁣⁣⁣⁣ .⁣⁣⁣⁣ #chimpanzee #chimp #chimpanzees #chimps #ape #wildlife #conservation #animals #africa #uganda #bulindi #bulindichimps #wildlifephotography #nature #natgeo⁣⁣⁣

Caption : Sharing some more images and stories from my takeover of @ilcp_photographers⁣ These are meant to be useful to aspiring photojournalists looking to get into conservation photography and science communication.⁣ ⁣ // The images from my previous post depicted the wildlife that I had continued access to or species that I was working with as a wildlife field biologist. The same goes for learning new camera techniques or even with new camera gear – stick to wildlife or locations that you have easy access to (nearby parks or even bird feeders or pets). ⁣ ⁣ My approach was no different In 2014 when I built my own camera trap system to learn how to create images of shy animals at night. I started with my dog and then found species that were nearby and unafraid – porcupines and snowshoe hares. There are plenty of tutorials, forums and commercially available camera trap gear now, so just do some googling and you’ll find it. ⁣ ⁣ As I mentioned at the end of my previous post, I was creating single images that lacked a story. With camera traps, I was trying different angles with these species to try and showcase more of their behaviors. But still, these were not stories and I was far from a working photographer at this point. ⁣

Caption : While many of us are used to the sight of a chimp eating a banana, it’s not actually part of their natural diet. Bananas didn’t even originate on the same continent where chimps live – Africa. Bananas are a Southeast Asia food that was brought to the Africa continent through trade in the last 2,000 years. This photo is of a wild male chimp, known as Araali to the researchers, belonging to the Bulindi chimpanzee, studied by Dr. McLennan (@bulindichimps), eating a banana in someone’s garden in rural western Uganda. The second photo shows another male, named Jack, standing in a eucalyptus tree plantation (another noon native plant) and found a discarded bottle to play with. Not a good thing with how many diseases we share in common with chimps. Photo 3 shows the little strip of forest left where chimps live in this part of western Uganda. Learn more in the story but David Quammen (@davidquammen) and I for @natgeo – link in my bio. Call to action here is to donate $ to the @bulindichimps, link in bio. Thank you.

Mususu was a northern female and I didn’t see her very much. She was shy. Within this wild chimpanzee community that I followed as a researcher in 2011, there were specific sub-groups of females that preferred to keep to a region within community’s territory. Some to the north or to the south and some kept to the center of the territory.     While the total number of chimpanzees in this community was 58 at the time, never in the history of the 40 year study did this group have all 58 members been the same place. Like humans, elephants, bats, and some whale species (to name a few), chimps are a fission-fusion society. Essentially this means that the social structure of chimps is dynamic. A large group of 30 comes together to feed on ripe figs, lets say, while other smaller groups of 4-8 chimps are a few miles away feeding on something else.⁣⁣ It makes for very interesting days following chimps through their equatorial forest, you never know who will show up.  Learn more about chimps in the current issue of @natgeo magazine, through my posts here and by following the conservation NGO @bulindichimps  .⁣⁣  .⁣⁣  .⁣⁣  .⁣⁣  #chimpanzee #chimp #chimpanzees #chimps #ape #wildlife #conservation #animals #africa #uganda #bulindi #bulindichimps #wildlifephotography #nature #natgeo⁣⁣

Caption : Images by Michael ‘Nick’ Nichols @michaelnicknichols in collaboration with Yellowstone National Park @yellowstonenps and myself. It was June 16th, 2014 when I received a voicemail from Michael ‘Nick’ Nichols @michaelnicknichols. We had never spoken before and he wanted to talk to me about camera traps. I called him back on the train from D.C. to Charlottesville and we immediately began to discuss his need for a longterm camera trap assistant for a project in Yellowstone. The following day, I met with Kathy Moran @kfmoran , at the time the senior natural history editor for National Geographic Magazine, and she officially offered me the position. Kathy said, ‘we’ll give you two weeks to start since you’ve never met Nick and you need to have that first date.’ Two weeks turned into nearly two years working with Nick and it’s remained the most formative time in my career. Spending that time with Nick and his wife Reba in the field was a rare opportunity to learn from a master artist, technician, and storyteller. Nick is a mentor, but more importantly, he’s my friend. • Nick has a new retrospective book coming out soon with a limited first run needed to reach 500 copies sold before the publisher begins the next run. Find a link with more info in Nick’s profile @michaelnicknichols • From the publisher: WILD is famed wildlife photographer Michael Nichols’ choice of his favorite images. Presented in chronological order from the beginning of his career in 1980, when he used Transparency film and was a Magnum photographer, until 2016, when he had embraced digital capture as the editor at large of National Geographic magazine. Shown without words to explain the images, Nichols is asking the viewer to “look and feel.” • “This book is to be displayed and left open to a page that sings for a time. It is as if I had made 240 limited edition prints of my career and had given them to all of you …this is truly meant as a BOOK for FRIENDS. If you are one of the first 500 people to order this book, you are helping to pay for the printing. You get a dedication, as well as the book and a fine art print.” – Michael Nichols
