Caption : My missing photo with Tupac: I attended the American Music Awards in 1991 because my sister was there performing with Michael Bolton. While backstage, I saw Tupac standing alone and I recognized him from Digital Underground (go listen to “Same Song” for context). His first album had not dropped yet, and nobody else seemed to notice him. I took a picture of him and [Riley’s mom] Cindy, and I thought she took one of him and me. This was in the era of point-and-shoot film cameras so results were unreliable. Unfortunately I never found the photo once the roll was developed. But thanks to modern technology and maestro digital artist @_vemix_ , the image has materialized. And for the record: he was effusive and gracious during our brief encounter, more so than anyone else we met or bothered for pictures that night. Edit: this might have been 1994 based on the AMA nominees that year. I’m so old that specific years get fuzzy. But the story remains the same.

We’ve all been there, right? 🎥: @_aliminator (full video coming this month) To those saying “we’ve heard you say that before:” I’ve done some tricks for the last time but not a final video. I will continue to skate but I’m winding down my efforts to try new (risky) stuff. My mortality is surfacing and I have accepted my comfort zone. I am not quitting, but I’ll mostly be “returning to the classics” from here on out. Thanks for being remotely interested in this attempt at a graceful exit.

But as the scene there continues to grow, I am now more inspired to visit but with a different directive: to learn some techniques from locals like Calvin, shown here learning halfcab kickflip to boardslide. Thanks to @ugandaskateboardsociety for the unwavering dedication to skateboarding and congrats to them on the recent Olympic representation in Rome. Caption : Yesterday I had the privilege of skating Dodge Skatepark, an area that my dad helped to design nearly 35 years ago. It remained in its original form up until November of last year, after locals rallied the city council and raised funds for resurfacing and slight upgrades. It was inspiring to hear from skaters that grew up here, as the park became their gathering place and, in many ways, their salvation from life’s hardships. It wasn’t the best or most modern design but it served a purpose far beyond a training grounds or competitive landscape. The skaters of Columbus and surrounding areas felt connected to this space in a way that is hard to explain unless you’ve been lucky enough to have a place like it. It was kinked and crusty and beloved for its uniquely flawed design. And now it’s smooth with proper coping, but has kept its shape and raw charm. In some ways, it is the only [literal] concrete legacy of my father’s impact on skateboarding; he knew us skaters as creative misfits that just needed a sense of community to thrive into our adult lives. Thanks to Donny @smellycurb for meeting me on this frigid morning and giving me first-hand insight to the rich history of this sacred place. And thanks to my lifelong skate friend & OG skatepark advocate @mikivuckovich for taking these pics. It was my pleasure to help revitalize the park and roll around in my dad’s honor. He would have been proudly stoic but stoked to see it.

It was inspiring to hear from skaters that grew up here, as the park became their gathering place and, in many ways, their salvation from life’s hardships. It wasn’t the best or most modern design but it served a purpose far beyond a training grounds or competitive landscape. The skaters of Columbus and surrounding areas felt connected to this space in a way that is hard to explain unless you’ve been lucky enough to have a place like it. It was kinked and crusty and beloved for its uniquely flawed design. And now it’s smooth with proper coping, but has kept its shape and raw charm. In some ways, it is the only [literal] concrete legacy of my father’s impact on skateboarding; he knew us skaters as creative misfits that just needed a sense of community to thrive into our adult lives. Thanks to Donny @smellycurb for meeting me on this frigid morning and giving me first-hand insight to the rich history of this sacred place. And thanks to my lifelong skate friend & OG skatepark advocate @mikivuckovich for taking these pics. It was my pleasure to help revitalize the park and roll around in my dad’s honor. Caption : Riley and I went to @bioxcellerator in Colombia to get treatments for [his] joints and [my] neck, which have all suffered consistent trauma through the years. I have a few close friends that made incredible progress with their lingering injuries after visits to the clinic so I’m excited for the results. But first was a skatepark tour with local legend @davidgonzalez. One kid referred to him as “DaVincio” while we were skating and I couldn’t agree more… he even learned my trick in 3 tries 🍝🤠 (Riley couldn’t join us because of a recent shoulder surgery). 🇨🇴🛹 🎥: @grampagram / @palomoog

That’s about the time I realized I should focus more on vert if I want to enjoy skating much longer, even though ramps were scarce and very few cared about us padded dinosaurs. Tomorrow – nearly 30 years later – my final video will be released and it’s entirely on vert. Caption : Thanks to everyone for the kind words about my final video “Tapes You Leave Behind.” The project was inspired by Stacy Peralta’s first video entitled “Skateboarding In The Eighties” in 1981 (before Bones Brigade Video Show). It featured Mike, Steve, Rodney and me, using this same [timeless] Ultravox song, from which the lyrics inspired the title. I asked the same crew, adding Lance and Tommy, to revisit some of their tricks in that video and BBVS since we’re all still actively skating 40+ years later. It has been my distinct honor to be associated with these legends through the decades, and it felt right to include them in my videographic swan song. I’ll still be here skating as much as possible; but no longer torturing myself mentally & physically for the sake of comprehensive video missions. You can watch the full edit on @thrashermag YouTube.
