The Moon Phases artwork (which will be the first authorized art permanently placed on the moon), consists of 125 one-inch sculptures that each correspond to distinct phases and vantage points of the moon. On Earth, 15.5-inch replicas of each mini sculpture will remain. Each sculpture is named after “people who have made great accomplishments in human history,” as Jeff Koons explained in the promotional video for Moon Phases posted nine months ago: “Each Moon Phase will have the name of an individual throughout history that’s made a tremendous contribution. One of the persons could be Leonardo da Vinci. Another one could be David Bowie.
