Manu Bennett Instagram – Kids out playing in the city of Harran on the Turkish/Syrian border. Originally a Sumerian trading centre Harran became one of the major stops along the Silk Road, being the first entry point into ancient Mesopotamia. Known to have existed long before 2000bc was Harrad’s famous temple Ekhulkhul (Temple of rejoicing) dedicated to Nanna the moon-god & his son Nusku god of light. After the Christian led destruction of Alexandria, Harran offered help to all refugees fleeing Roman persecution. The city went through many ruling transitions including Babylonian, Assyrian, Archaemenid, Macedonian, Seleucid, Roman & Parthian. It’s importance as a trade & religious centre was surpassed by few other cities of the time but a violent occupation by the Mongols in 1260 led to the citys completely destruction in 1271 & the massacre of all its inhabitants.
