The thing about realisations is that they don’t much care for timing. As I bobbed in the Tyrrhenian Sea like a discarded cork, it suddenly and terrifyingly came to me that I’d completely forgotten how to swim. Not ideal timing, to say the least.
I mean, yes, I can swim in pools where I can literally stand up in the deep end, but to be suspended in these gorgeous waters, waters that were trying gently but insistently to pull me into the open seas, no, I couldn’t swim to, once again literally, save my life.
And so I clung to the handrails, imagining myself as a sort of aquatic Spider-Man, but what I’m sure more accurately resembled an infant clinging haplessly to its parents leg.
And while doing said clinging, I witnessed what was by far the most gorgeous sunset I saw this year. So gorgeous in fact, that I jumped right back in, to do some more bobbing mixed with some experimental flailing, hoping that like riding a bike, swimming would come back to me. It did not. And yet, it’s not fear or terror i remember from this day, but awe and gratitude. Oh, and the pizza (with coke) that followed.
