Amber Tamblyn Instagram – It’s International Women’s Day. I cut off half a foot of my hair. Here’s a picture for the algorithm, to pull you in close like a good poet can do, to tell you I’ve been thinking a lot about being a woman lately. I’ve been thinking about women all over the world, especially those in conflict zones, whose bodies are collateral damage in wars, politics, the work place, our own homes. Women who have been assaulted, kidnapped, silenced, displaced, disappeared. I’m thinking about South Sudanese women, Palestinian women, Congolese women, Iranian women, Haitian women, Jewish women, Ukrainian women, American women. ALL women. I’m thinking about E. Jean Carroll getting justice decades later against a man this country might say yes to again. I’m thinking about why we keep saying yes to these men, again and again. I’m thinking about the ghosts of the MeToo movement; the stories I heard that still haunt me, that will never get their reckoning, their day in court, their light of day. I’m thinking about what we let happen to Brittany Watts, American Black mothers, and the women in Alabama who were so close to getting their IVF transfers. I’m thinking of the women who will never get to have their babies, and the women who never got to say goodbye to their own. I’m thinking about when Ada Limón wrote that the insides of herself are part female, part male, part terrible dragon, and how much I know this to be true. I’m thinking about everything that’s burned in the fires of other’s mouths, how much blood we’ve collectively lost, us women, from all of it—enough to fill a thousand oceans. I’m thinking of all that we hold, and all that is ripped away from us. Of the ways we are torn into, split apart, pitted against one another. Today I’m thinking about you.
