It is a historically and culturally rich neighborhood known for its cobblestone streets and colorful mansions. Pelourinho has significant historical importance as it was the center of political, religious, and cultural life in Salvador during the 17th and 18th centuries. In the past, this location was used to punish slaves and criminals, making the pelourinho a symbol of oppression. Currently, Pelourinho has undergone a revitalization process and has become a vibrant area with craft shops, restaurants, bars, and music venues. The region also hosts various cultural manifestations such as capoeira performances, folk dances, and live music. Moreover, Pelourinho is famous for its candomblé terreiros, which are sacred places for the practice of Afro-Brazilian religion.
