This demonstration farm is growing crops that have never been grown before in The Gambia, like pineapples and strawberries. The onion variety being so successfully grown by the women we met in Kalaji the day before, was tried out here first. Many of the Self Help Africa projects in The Gambia link together like this for maximum impact & efficiency. The next goal? To replicate the success of this demonstration farm in many other regions across The Gambia.💚 @selfhelpafrica

Jaimie Alexander Instagram – Wow. 💚 What to say about an unforgettable few days in The Gambia seeing the impact of Self Help Africa’s programs here.

These programs are much needed. Life in The Gambia can be really tough. The Gambia is one of the world’s poorest countries (ranking 174th out of 190 countries on the Human Development Index). Youth unemployment is high. The effects of climate change are making it more difficult for people to grow food to feed their families.

I left so inspired and impressed by the people I met working together in Self Help Africa’s programs to teach one another all these great skills and to help address these challenges. 💚
Jaimie Alexander Instagram – Cheers to another great day in The Gambia that started with homemade tea given to me by these wonderful women farmers & entrepreneurs.

We started at Kalaji women’s community garden, one of 120 Self Help Africa gardens across 4 regions of The Gambia.

The women greeted us like good friends & gave me a new Gambian name, Isatou. ♥️

This garden is the ONLY source of income for these women and another Self Help Africa project makes sure they receive a fair price for the vegetables they work so hard to grow.

The Market Information Systems project provides access to information through a WhatsApp chatbot, or SMS or voicemail, so everyone is included, regardless of literacy level.
