Jaimie Alexander Instagram – Say hello to the women oyster farmers of Kartong, The Gambia 👋

Self Help Africa are working with these women as part of our @irish.aid funded project that aims to improve food security and incomes for 12,000 people, through:
– Sustainable oyster harvesting and processing
– Waste management
– Vegetable production

Today, a group of women oyster farmers demonstrated to our Gambia team & @jaimiealexander a number of programme activities, including:

– Rack culturing oysters – stringing the oysters and placing on ‘racks’ in the water to better protect mangroves
– Sorting through oysters to find the superior female oyster shells
– The planting of new mangroves and the protection of existing and restored mangrove forests

Why are programmes like this so vital in The Gambia? Low lying coastal areas such as Kartong are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, putting livelihoods at risk.

Part of the solution lies in protecting the previous mangrove forests of the region. Mangroves are a hotspot for biodiversity, providing food and income through activities such as oyster farming – and are also up to seven times more effective than other forests at removing polluting carbon from the atmosphere.

Working together, women oyster farmers in The Gambia are transforming their families’ futures and protecting our precious planet too 💚
