Janice Bryant Howroyd Instagram – Althea Gibson was one of my first sports sheroes!
Ms. Gibson was the first African American to win a Wimbledon singles title and play at the U.S. Open in Forest Hills, N.Y., as well as the French Open. Her remarkable career spanned nearly twenty years, securing almost 100 professional titles, including five Grand Slam crowns. After retiring from tennis in 1958, she ventured into golf, becoming the first African American to earn an LPGA card.
